Time to Get to Work

With Obama's votes tipping over the edge of candidacy and Hillary's not-concession concession speech, I realized last night that it was, unfortunately, time to get to work.

I'd allowed myself to coast through the primaries. Although I really wanted Hillary to win (mainly because she's a woman, as I believe I expounded upon here earlier), I knew she wasn't a great candidate: she comes with a lot of baggage and isn't all that charismatic. And as for the other candidates, I would've really been happy with any of them. So I allowed myself not to send in money, not to go door-to-door, not to put a bumper sticker on my car.

The MAIN reason I did this, though, was to save my energy for the final battle--or to bargain with myself, depending on your point of view: I could sit out the primaries, but as SOON as they were over, I had to get back into the game.

So now that we've entered the final battle, it's time to awaken from my primary slumber. Time to donate money, in spite of being in debt. Time to get a bumper sticker and put it on my car. Time to go to Obama's website and sign up to volunteer. And, eventually, it will soon be time to go knocking on doors, perhaps even traveling to another state to do so. WHATEVER IT TAKES.

And it will NOT be fun. I am NOT looking forward to it. I'm not looking forward to making awkward calls to strangers bugging them about voting. I'm not looking forward to attending stupid parties and rallies. I'm ESPECIALLY not looking forward to hearing the debates--oh, god, I start spitting acid after hearing McCain talk for more than a second!!

But this is a battle that we MUST WIN. WE MUST. I let myself sit by the 2000 and 2004 elections going, oh, Gore's clearly going to win. Oh, look at how Bush has fucked up these last four years, Kerry's clearly going to win. People, we are against FORMIDABLE FOES who are STRONG and have a HUGE, HUGE, HUGE number of STUPID people ready to dedicate their time to campaigning and to voting for them.

I CANNOT sit by and watch the Democrats lose again. I know it's inconvenient. I'm already strapped for time to work on my career. But that's why I gave myself all that time in the primaries.

Now, however, it's campaign time.
